When looking for a newborn photographer, many parents are curious about what to expect from their session. From what is included in the package to the types of poses that will be done, it helps to have a clear idea ahead of time. I wanted to take a few moments to highlight some of the newborn photography poses I offer and give you a visual overview of what your session may look like. Every baby and every session is unique so we might not be able to do all of these, but this will give you a helpful glimpse into the styles and setups you can expect.
Your baby’s safety is always my top priority. I will never pose a baby in a way that feels unsafe or uncomfortable. While some images may look like the baby is posed independently, I am always holding and supporting them throughout the process. This ensures they remain safe and secure at all times.
Side Lying Pose
The side-lying pose is a beautiful position that highlights your baby’s tiny features and soft expressions. It allows me to capture sweet profile angles, delicate eyelashes, and those little curled fingers and toes. Babies are typically very comfortable in this pose because it feels gentle and relaxed. Throughout the setup, I carefully support and position your baby so they remain safe, cozy, and content.

Chin on Hands Pose
The chin on hands pose is a classic favorite! It creates a sweet, peaceful look that many parents love for announcements and keepsakes. Because this pose requires careful positioning, it is always done with full support and gentle adjustments. The result is a soft, timeless portrait that never goes out of style.

Bum Up (Tushy) Pose
The bum up pose is a newborn favorite that shows how naturally curled and cozy babies are in their earliest days. This position highlights tiny rolls, delicate fingers, and soft facial expressions while keeping your baby snug and comfortable. Many parents love this pose because it feels organic and sweet rather than overly styled. Throughout the setup, your baby is gently supported and carefully positioned so they remain safe and relaxed.

Potato Sack Pose
The potato sack pose is a cozy wrapped position that keeps babies snug, secure, and comfortably supported. This pose highlights your baby’s sweet facial features and tiny expressions while creating a clean, timeless portrait. Because babies are fully wrapped, it is often very soothing and works well for little ones who are more awake or wiggly. Your baby is carefully supported and positioned the entire time to keep them calm and comfortable.

Wrapped Prop Pose
The wrapped prop pose is a cozy portrait that keeps babies snug and secure while highlighting their sweet facial features. Your baby is fully wrapped and supported inside a soft prop, which makes this pose soothing and comfortable. Parents love this style for its timeless and polished look. Gentle support is maintained throughout the entire setup so your baby remains calm and content.

What is the Best Age to Photograph a Newborn?
Newborn babies grow very quickly. In just a few weeks their tiny features can change, and their sleepiness shifts into alertness and curiosity.
Most parents choose between two general timeframes. In-studio sessions often happen around 5-15 days old. Lifestyle sessions usually take place between 3 and 8 weeks. There is no right or wrong answer. It comes down to personal preference and what feels best for your family.

How to Safely Pose Newborn Babies for Photos
Newborn safety is one of the most important things for parents to understand when planning a session. Your baby’s comfort and well-being always come first. That is why I am CPR and baby safety certified, it’s important to chose a photographer who is knowledgable and experienced.
During in-studio sessions, I follow your baby’s natural cues. I never force them into uncomfortable positions for the sake of a photo. Instead, I gently guide them into poses they naturally settle into. If a pose does not feel right for them, we simply move on.
By creating a calm and relaxed environment, I keep your baby warm and supported throughout the entire session. Safety means supporting their delicate neck and limbs at all times and never pushing beyond what feels right.
5 Tips to Help Your Newborn Session Go Smoothly
You don’t need to do much to prepare, but a few small things can make the session feel even more relaxed and enjoyable.
• Try to keep baby awake for 1–2 hours before the session if possible. This often helps them fall into a deeper sleep once we begin.
• Feed baby shortly before the session so they are full and content.
• Dress baby in a simple zip-up sleeper without a onesie underneath. This helps with smooth transitions into wraps or poses.
• Bring extra bottles or pacifiers if you use them. Even if you rarely need them, they can be helpful.
• Relax and enjoy the moment. Your calm energy helps your baby feel safe and comfortable.
