October 9, 2025

As an NJ family photographer, one of the questions I’m asked most often is, “What should we wear?”
It’s an important one because your outfit choices can truly make or break how your photos turn out. But don’t panic! That’s exactly what I’m here for. I help my clients put together looks that feel comfortable, cohesive, and classic so your photos look beautiful not just today, but for years to come. If you need help choosing your fall family photo outfits, you’ve come to the right place!

Fall Family Outfit Inspiration

To make planning easier, I’ve created some fall outfit inspiration ideas with clickable links to help you prepare for your upcoming session. I’ve tried to keep everything affordable and aesthetic, so you can look and feel amazing without breaking the bank. These outfits are meant to serve as a guide, so feel free to mix and match or use pieces you already own!

My favorite color combinations are neutrals with subtle pops of color. During the fall and winter months, I always recommend incorporating layers and textures into your outfits. Layers not only photograph beautifully but also help keep you warm as the days get cooler. Think cozy cardigans, jackets, or vests for that perfect finishing touch. For texture, try adding chunky knits, corduroy, leather, or a touch of faux fur; all of which bring depth and visual interest to your photos.

Shades of Olive, Blue, and Cream for Fall Photos

Olive and cream blend seamlessly with the earthy browns and golden tones of Fall, while blue adds a cool contrast that keeps the images balanced and timeless. These colors work beautifully in Nature trails with fallen leaves, muted greenery or lightly wooded parks where the foliage is transitioning.

Choosing Outfits for Mom First

I always suggest starting with mom’s outfit first. This gives you the perfect foundation to style everyone else around her look. Dresses and skirts are wonderful choices for portrait sessions because they’re flattering on all body types! Long, flowy skirts or dresses photograph beautifully and add a sense of dimension and movement to your images. Fabrics like chiffon or tulle work especially well for this. And don’t forget- a great pair of heels can elongate your figure and add an elegant finishing touch!

Coordinating Outfits for Family Pictures

When coordinating the rest of the family, try to limit matching prints or colors to no more than two people. This helps keep your photos visually balanced and ensures the focus stays on you, not the outfits.

Instead of having everyone wear the same color, choose two or three complementary tones that blend naturally together. You can play with different shades, textures, and subtle patterns to create interest and cohesion.

Just remember to avoid logos, bold graphics, or overly busy patterns, as they can distract from the connection and emotion in your photos.

Once you have the dress or outfit picked out for mom, don’t forget about accessorizing! Adding a statement necklace, earrings or a bracelet will help complete your look, and add a little flair and pop to your photos.

Shades of Mauve for Fall Photos

The romantic muted purplish-pink of mauve complements warm, neutral backgrounds beautifully. The color pops without being loud, and golden hour light adds a dreamy warmth. It really stands out in botanical gardens, flower fields or arboretums, shaded wooded paths, forest clearings with filtered sunlight or tree-lined trails with soft greens or browns.

Choosing Outfits for Dad

We can’t forget about the dads! I always suggest styling the dads to complement their partner’s outfit. Fitted dress pants or nice jeans paired with close-toed shoes are a classy choices that photograph beautifully. For your session, it’s best to skip the shorts, sandals, and loose-fitting pants as they tend to look too casual on camera.

Layers are also a great way to elevate his look:

  • Blazers
  • Sweaters
  • Vests

They photograph especially well, even in the warmer months. They add dimension, texture, and a polished feel to your images. I know it might not be the most comfortable option in the moment, but trust me — it’s always worth it when you see the final photos!

Accessories for Dads and Sons

Don’t forget the little details! Even men can add a few thoughtful details to elevate their look! Ties or bowties, colored socks, suspenders, and watches are all great accessories that add personality and polish. While they might seem like small details, they bring a subtle touch of class and sophistication to your photos, the kind that makes your images feel extra refined and complete.

Shades of Dark Neutrals for Fall Photos

A rich, timeless palette choice. Shades of dark neutrals create an elegant, moody, and elevated feel for fall photos. Perfect for more contemporary photos in urban streets, old factories or repurposed warehouse areas, or even dense forests with filtered light, trails surrounded by evergreens and tall trees and wooded areas with fallen leaves and tree trunks.

Fall Family Photo Outfit Ideas for Kids

I always suggest dressing the kids in something more dressy instead of their casual playwear. Dressy clothes, even on kids, will automatically make your photos stand out! Remember, there is no such thing as “too dressed up” for your portrait session, so have some fun!

I know they may be little, but many of the tips For Mom and For Dad still apply to the kids. (They’re basically little adults anyway, right?)

For the girls, dresses and accessories are perfect! Maybe add a fun headband or bow for an extra pop of color. For the boys, layers are adorable! And don’t forget about the cute details like suspenders or a fun bowtie!

Shades of Mustard and Rust for Fall Photos

These are classic fall tones — warm, earthy, and rich. They photograph beautifully when paired with natural textures and golden light. They look best in: farms or open preserves with natural, uncut fields, parks with trees starting to turn yellow and orange, barns, wood fences, hay bales, pumpkin patches, or rustic fences and wooden walkways.

Vibrant Fall Colors for Family Photoshoots

These colors are fun and rich. They work best with scenic overlooks or hiking trails with valley views or parks with elevation (like Ramapo Reservation).
